PASTEL PENCIL WORKSHOP

with

BERNADETTE BALLANTYNE

SUNDAY 7 JUNE

My work is created using soft pastels and soft pastel pencils, with a focus on realism, light, and subtle colour. I use pastel pencils to build detail, refine edges, and add clarity while maintaining the softness of the medium. My subject matter often includes animals, people, and natural forms, with an emphasis on careful observation and texture.

Participants will be guided through my recommended soft pastel pencil materials and surfaces, including a discussion of favourites and suitable alternatives. I will demonstrate the basics of my technique and working process on a floral piece – covering layering, colour choices, and mark-making. Members will then have time to apply these methods to create their own artwork, with guidance and feedback throughout the session.

Date: Sunday 7 June

Time: 10.00am to 2.00pm

Cost: $125

Where: The Art Room, Tauranga Society of Artists 171a Elizabeth Street Ext

Class no: Minimum 10, Maximum 16 attendees

INTRO ART WORKSHOPS

JUNE - DRAWING

DRAWING WITH ROBIN PURLLANT

WEDNESDAYS

10, 17 and 24 JUNE

The process of drawing accurately develops your observational skills which are fundamental for so many art forms. In these three tutorials I will guide you, step-by-step, through the various stages needed for developing your skills using line and tone.

I have used accurate drawing during the whole of my creative career. When young, I won a scholarship to study for four years at one of London’s leading art schools. After graduating, I went on to work in international advertising agencies as an art/creative director. During that time I also painted many portraits and illustrated numerous children’s books. Now retired, I concentrate on painting ‘personal stories’ using ‘realism’ in a unique way.

Session 1 - Lines and Strokes - 10 June

This tutorial focuses on the many ‘linear’ possibilities that can be achieved using a soft pencil. The ‘linear’ accuracy of an object’s shape is the first step for achieving a convincing drawing.

Session 2 - Tones and Blends - 17 June

This tutorial focuses on the many different ways tone can be created and controlled. The use of graphic textures adds interest to drawings.

Session 3 – Setting Out – 24 June

This tutorial focuses on the steps needed to produce an accurate drawing of an object. From setting out the parameters of a drawing through the necessary steps needed before adding tone.

Date: Wednesday 10, 17 and/or 24 June

Time: 9.30am to 12.00pm

Cost: $30 per workshop

Where: The Art Room, Tauranga Society of Artists 171a Elizabeth Street Ext

Class no: Minimum 10, Maximum 16 attendees

What to Bring: All materials will be supplied
