AUTUMN COMPETITION 2026
Our Autumn Competitions were held on Saturday, March 7th, 2026, with an impressive 141 artworks entered across 11 categories by 45 talented artists. It was wonderful to see several new members taking part and even winning awards.
Judge Nick Eggleston began the morning by sharing three of his own artworks, giving members a glimpse into his illustrative acrylic painting style. He judged the entries with efficiency and clarity, allowing awards to be ready for presentation by 11am.
While judging took place, members enjoyed tea in the art room and an engaging talk from photographer Nick Clegg, who spoke about creating strong reference photos and photographing artwork effectively.
The Beauty of Nature category proved the most popular with 23 entries, followed by the Landscape category with 20. Special congratulations go to new members Marian Kroeze, who received four awards including three trophies, and Andy Davies, who earned three merit awards.
The Competition Team extends heartfelt thanks to all members who assisted with setting up and packing down, as well as those who offered help on the day. Your support made the event run smoothly. - Ruth Kenyon‑Slade and the Competition Team

NEW MEMBERS HAPPY HOUR
Our recent New Members Happy Hour was a fantastic success, with 49 new members attending — a wonderful turnout and a great sign of the strength of our growing TSA community. Members enjoyed drinks and delicious nibbles — a big thank you to everyone who contributed to the food.
We were treated to an informative overview from Deb Clarke, who highlighted the many benefits and opportunities TSA offers its members. From workshops to competitions to exhibitions to the Daily Programme there is plenty to look forward to.
Helpful insights about the upcoming Expo were also shared by Diana Roband, giving members a clear picture of what’s ahead and how to get involved.
A special congratulations to Sook Jung, who was the lucky winner of the $50 Gordon Harris voucher in our new member draw!
A warm welcome again to all our new members — we’re delighted to have you with us.

APPRAISAL SESSION WITH DAMIEN KURTH
The art room was full of members and their artworks for the appraisal or ”critique session”, as a more friendly term that Damien prefers to use.
Elly Sharp introduced professional artist Damien who then discussed four of his completed artworks that demonstrated his recognisable style. He describes himself as a “mark maker” and uses a variety of mediums, working from life 99% of the time.
Damien was masterful and generous with his comments of 30 artworks in total, which involved a huge variety of styles, mediums and colours, some finished works, others in progress.
Damien made many useful suggestions about contrast, colour, depth, when is a painting finished, and how gaps can be useful to let the viewer fill these in.
Jan Maber thanked Damien for the session and his skills in critiquing so many varied artworks.

ART EXPO SEPTEMBER 2025
The 2025 TSA Art Expo overcame the challenges of a last-minute venue change, which required significant additional work and expense for the organisers. Despite these hurdles, the new location at Tauranga Intermediate School was very well received by visitors, who praised the setting and atmosphere.
The Expo opened with a Gala Evening, where the guests who braved the poor weather, enjoyed a celebration accompanied by canapés and bubbles. The big highlight was the Jensen Supreme Art Award 2025 – three judges shortlisted 30 finalists, and guest judge Liz Cooper awarded the top honour at the Gala, to Vicki Fraser.
Over the four open days, the event drew strong attendance, and visitors enjoyed viewing the 525 artworks on display that were created by 93 artists. They cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award which was won by Shona Mackenzie.
Thank you to everyone – artists, volunteers, organisers, and supporters – who helped make this event possible.

Life Drawing Weekend
Saturday was over subscribed and Sunday more enthusiasts attended. We had four different models in total and worked with charcoal, graphite and conte sticks. Damien did an outstanding job demonstrating plus keeping everyone informed, included and on task .Many drawings were completed from one minute warm ups to longer poses. The team work approach worked well and ensured everyone got a lot of support.

Spring Competition 2025
This year's spring competition saw 134 artworks entered by 45 artists, across 10 categories—an impressive showcase of creativity and talent! More than 60 members gathered in the art room to hear guest speaker Lynette Fisher share her inspiring journey as an artist and insights into the prestigious Molly Morpeth Art Competition.
Following the judging by Ellie Smith, anticipation built as members waited for the awards presentation. Ellie presented the awards and offered thoughtful commentary on the artworks she had judged.
